Downtown East Minneapolis Rooftop Retreat

This project entails the transformation of an underutilized rooftop space in the heart of Downtown East, Minneapolis, into an urban oasis. The team sought to capitalize on the majestic views of iconic landmarks like the U.S. Bank Stadium, the Guthrie Theater, and the Mississippi River. The previous space lacked appeal and comfort, failing to provide a gathering spot for residents. The new rooftop deck design aims to rectify this issue and enhance the overall living experience.

Design Elements:

Custom Furniture: The heart of this project is the custom-designed and fabricated furniture, crafted with a fusion of materials, including powder-coated aluminum, thermally modified ash, and vinyl cord. This furniture not only offers style and elegance but also durability and comfort.

Diverse Furniture Selection: The rooftop space is thoughtfully adorned with a variety of furniture pieces to cater to different resident preferences. These pieces include dining tables and chairs for communal meals, bar stools and tables for drinks with a view, chaise lounges for relaxation, benches for group seating, and loveseats for intimate conversations.

Native Plantings: The majority of the planters on the rooftop incorporate native plantings. These indigenous flora not only add a touch of nature to the urban environment but also attract local wildlife and contribute to ecological sustainability.

Vegetable Garden: The design features a spacious raised bed for residents to grow their own vegetables, fostering a sense of self-sufficiency and healthy living in the heart of the city.

Custom Screen: A carefully designed custom screen creates a sense of enclosure, offering privacy and protection from the elements. Adorned with cantina lights, it adds a touch of warmth and charm to the rooftop ambiance. Moreover, it effectively blocks the view of unsightly mechanical equipment on the roof, ensuring that residents can fully enjoy their majestic surroundings.

Project Impact:

The Downtown East Minneapolis Rooftop Retreat has proven to be a resounding success. It has not only revitalized the previously underutilized space but also attracted new residents to the building. Additionally, it has become a cherished gathering place for old friends and neighbors, fostering a sense of community and belonging in the heart of the city.
