RICA
Conservation Agriculture University in Southeast Rwanda
The Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA) campus design supports the training of the next generation of farmers and agricultural leaders in developing healthy and sustainable systems for Rwanda’s future food security. Informed by multidisciplinary research and analysis, the masterplan and curriculum pose a new model for agricultural education that is grounded in One Health–an understanding that human, ecological, and animal health are inextricably intertwined. The resulting campus experience adopts this new paradigm, harnessing symbiotic ecological and agricultural relationships to sustainably achieve greater yields, increased biodiversity, utilized waste streams, healthier soils, and cleaner water.
PEBL’s involvement in the project dates back to Jonathan Blaseg’s role as Project Manager of Landscape Architecture during his time as a Design Director with MASS. Since then PEBL has been engaged to aid with design, technical documentation, and visualization, including the production of a video for the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum’s Triennial Event: Nature, concurrently the work will be shown in Amsterdam at the Cube Gallery.
